It was a lovely sunny April’s day,
Liverpool v Nott’s Forest,
An anxious FA Cup show.

It was the 15th of April, 1989,
The sun was shining brightly down.
Everything just seemed so fine,
Everywhere you’d looked,
You’d see no frown.

Though as three o’clock neared,
Something felt cold and eery.
Red fans jeered,
As kick off was here oh so nearly.

All to see was excitement and laughter,
Some families together for the very last time.
Nobody knew of the heartbreak after,
This was when we knew nothing was fine.

What on earth was going on?
Where did everything go so wrong?
There were cries upon Leppings Lane,
Of souls who’ll never rise again.

I looked above from on my knee,
I saw pain torturing a red sea.
I couldn’t help but feel the need to help,
But no one would hear my measly yelp.

I looked around for a place to hide,
Though I couldn’t ignore the pain inside.
I heard a din of guilty cries,
Soon to hear those copper lies.

For they are the ones we place our blame,
for letting those die on Leppings Lane.
some as young as maybe ten,
but they didn’t care, it wasn’t them.

23 years on its what we want,
Justice but they say we can’t.
Because of those coppers and their selfish tricks,
So I’m writing this for the ninety-six.

Though I wasn’t born until 7 years after,
My heart goes out to the victims of the disaster.
And to the families and friends I must say,
Your loved ones should never have been taken that day.

And though I know justice has never been done,
I promise you, their memory will carry on.
Because they are loyal fans like you and I,
Who never in a million years deserved to die.
